There is no application process, and you do not need to be admitted to the University.

a personal plan to earn a certificate: 503-725-8085 or email
snydere@pdx.edu.

must complete the four core courses as well as two elective courses in three years
from the beginning of coursework.

- Make a formal request by filling out the online
request form.
- Do I need to go through the admissions process at Portland State?
You do not need to be admitted to Portland State
University to take our human resource management courses.
- How do I register?
There are three ways to register:
- Go online through the catalog page, register for courses and make an online payment.
- Download the registration form, fill it out, and mail the form with payment to PO Box 1491, Portland, OR 97207.
- Call Registration directly at 503-725-4832.
- How much do the courses and books cost?
Tuition is $495 per course, which includes
books and materials. If you would like to take the course for credit, an
additional fee of $55 per credit will be assessed, or $110 per course.
- Do I get University credit for the HR courses?
The HR Management Program is a noncredit program.
However, lower-division University credit is available for an additional fee.
For an extra $110 per course (two credits), you receive two MGMT 199 credits
from the Portland State University School of Business. (You do not need to take
courses for credit to earn your Certificate of Completion.)
The main reasons students request credit are:
- Their employers only reimburse courses that are taken for credit.
- They want to apply credits toward a bachelor's degree.
Note: the MGMT 199 credits will likely be accepted as elective credits. If you are
interested in this option, check with the institution to which you wish to transfer the credits.
- Are the courses graded?
Courses in the Professional Development Center are graded
pass/no-pass. If you are taking courses for credit, this grade shows up on your academic
transcript. If you are taking noncredit courses, your certificate of completion serves as
an indicator that you passed the course.
- Who teaches the HR courses?
Our
instructors are top managers
in local organizations, private consultants, and Portland State University faculty members.
- Can I use these courses for recertification hours for my PHR/SPHR designation?
Yes. The Professional Development Center is an
HRCI-Authorized Provider certified by the Human Resources Certification Institute
to provide continuing education courses for PHR and SPHR recertification credits.
Each HR program course is worth 1.8 recertification credits.
- Will I get my PHR Certification by taking this program?
No. The PHR Certification is awarded by the
Human Resources Certification Institute. To obtain their certification, you
need to pass their PHR exam.
- How does the Summer Intensive Program work?
Our program is a great way to get quality Human
Resource Management training in a short time. Most students complete the program
in six months to three years, taking one course at a time.
During the summer, a different option is offered that allows you to complete
the program even faster. Six courses are scheduled between June and August;
they do not overlap. You can take all six courses and still only be taking one
course at a time. Courses are the normal 18 hours in length. Students can enroll
in any number of the courses; there is no need to commit to all six. Each course
runs two weeks, comprising two Tuesday evenings (6-9pm), two Thursday evenings
(6-9pm), and one Saturday (9am-4pm).
- How do I request my certificate?
Students who have completed the coursework
and passed the required five classes to earn the Certificate of Completion
should
request a printed certificate. We will
review the classes and mail your certificate within fourteen days from
your request.
- What is the refund policy?
Full refunds are offered for cancellations five
(5) or more business days prior to the event. Cancellations one to four (1-4) days
prior to the course start date incur a $25 processing fee. There are no refunds on
the first day of the course or beyond.
